Why did you choose the New Forest?

I recently took my youngest daughter to visit Bournemouth University, and on the way, we drove through the New Forest. I hadn’t realised just how stunning it was, and it immediately got me thinking—I’ve got to bring my gravel bike down here. I’d also been on the hunt for a change from the Surrey and Kent gravel loops I’d been riding almost every weekend. At just 90 minutes from Clapham Junction, it seemed like the perfect spot to explore and still make it back home the same day. A friend of mine had also taken his camper van down there for a long weekend and recommended a few routes, so I had some great suggestions to get started.

What is the route best for?

The route we chose flowed really well. It took in various parts of the Forest, including riding by the coast and into some small towns. It covered a mix of terrains, as well as being fairly flat, so it could be ridden at a fair pace. For those in the city who are looking for something different that can be done in a day, this route was perfect. We caught an early train and were back in Waterloo by the early evening. Being mid-week, it was also extremely quiet with only the odd dog walker around.

Can you recommend any mid-ride pit stops?

We stopped pretty quickly to get some breakfast in Lyndhurst. We went to Bakehouse 24 and I ended up having a sausage/egg croissant combo, outstanding.
Towards the middle of the ride, just after the coast, we stopped in Lymington for a coffee at Hazy Days. I had a cheeky flapjack, very nice.
We arrived back at Brockenhurst station earlier than planned so ended up going to the pub for a beer and some well-earned dinner. This was The Snakecatcher pub. We also had a cheeky farewell drink at the Brew Dog in Waterloo Station when we arrived back in London. All in all a gastronomical gravel extravaganza

Top tip for anyone who might try this route?

Nothing specific. It is the same as if you were going on any ride. Make sure you have the route uploaded to your head unit. Ensure you have all the right equipment if you have a puncture or three in my case. Also, make sure you have sufficient food and drink for the distance you are expecting to cover. We were very lucky with the weather but I packed my Pro Rain Jacket just in case and it also doubled up as an extra layer, keeping me warm on the train ride home.Allow sufficient time if there are any delays with the trains. We were an hour late arriving and our train was delayed on our return. But that by no means dampened my enthusiasm to do it all over again. It was an excellent day and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something different and a sense of adventure.
