Have Cyclists Forgotten the Beauty of Winter Riding

Winter on the roads takes a bit more convincing.

For many cyclists, it’s become something to avoid and the season becomes more about smart trainers, indoor watts and staying within their comfort zone.

It’s dark when the alarm goes off, the roads are damp, and the thought of staying indoors is more tempting. The clocks have changed, daylight is shorter, and every ride starts or ends in darkness. We tell ourselves we weren’t made for frozen fingers, flooded lanes, muddy tyres, numb toes or wet gloves that never quite dry out.

But for those who still love to ride their bikes outside and realise it’s too early to start thinking about training plans or next season, there’s a strange satisfaction in rolling out when it’s barely light and when the weather gives you every excuse not to. Now is the time to rediscover what you enjoy about the bike.

Flooded roads become detours. Detours become new routes. You stop at a café you’ve never noticed before, or crest a hill to see the sun breaking through the mist. There’s a calmness that makes you glad you went out and it feels real. These are the kind of moments that don’t happen if you stay inside.

You’re likely to get home cold, wet and covered in grime, and somehow it still feels worth it. Not because it was fast or you beat a best time but because you did it anyway.

Winter riding isn’t about chasing speed or distance. It’s about keeping the habit, staying connected to the road, and finding a bit of headspace when everything else slows down. It reminds you that there’s beauty to be found in the effort, even when the weather is testing.

This time of year is not about average speed or watts per kilo, but about rediscovering the love of being in nature and slowing it down.
