Refuelling the Right Way

After getting absolutely destroyed on a training ride by one of the local teams, I decided the only way to properly refuel was to explore some of London’s best ‘pizza-by-the-slice’ spots. Pizza by the slice, or pizza al taglio, originated in Rome, Italy. Vendors discovered that selling pizza in smaller portions made it easier for customers to eat on the go. With that in mind, I set out to sample three highly recommended spots from London’s food scene.

Breadstall, Clapham

Originally a market stall selling bread and cakes, Breadstall eventually expanded into a pizza haven, known for its signature biga dough. Their consistency and quality have made them a personal favourite, especially after returning from one of my cycling escapes outside London.

For this visit, I went for the pepperoni slice, and it didn’t disappoint. The slice was so massive that I had to share it with a friend—always a good sign!

Homeslice, Marylebone

Homeslice started in 2011 as a humble food stall before opening its first brick-and-mortar location in 2013. With a stellar reputation, I decided to go for a marinara slice—sometimes simplicity is best. And in this case, it really was. The combination of tangy tomato sauce, garlic, and oregano was spot on.

Base Face Pizza, Putney

Base Face Pizza is a relative newcomer, opening its first restaurant in Hammersmith in 2021. Despite its short time in the game, it has quickly made a name for itself. Their Putney location has recently started serving pizza by the slice, so I had to check it out.

To round off my traditional pizza choices, I opted for a Margherita slice—because classics never fail. Once again, I was served an excellent pie, and not a pineapple in sight!

Cornicello, Hampton

No pizza tour is complete without dessert. Near my house is Cornicello, an independent pizzeria that serves authentic Italian treats. To finish the day, I indulged in an affogato—a shot of espresso poured over a scoop of hazelnut gelato. A perfect blend of two of my favourite things: coffee and ice cream.
