Stage 2 saw a break of five capitalise on the rolling route and poor conditions in Devon, with a mix of WorldTour and lower-ranked teams represented off the front. It went right down to the wire, with Cameron Meyer of Mitchelton-Scott taking it in a stunning finale – just a few metres ahead of a thundering chasing pack.
Meyer and Allessandro Tonelli (Bardiani-CSF) were the final two survivors of the break and narrowly beat out the elite group behind, containing all the big general classification favourites.

The OVO Energy green maillot now passes to Tonelli, by virtue of bonus seconds accrued on the intermediate sprints earlier in the day and the 6 seconds he received for second place on the stage.
The Wahoo Points competition also changes hands with Meyer now in the dark blue maillot, after equalling the 15 points scored yesterday by Andre Greipel.
The break in full was: Tonelli, Meyer, Erick Rowsell (Madison-Genesis), Scott Davies (Dimension Data) and Matthew Teggart (Team WIGGINS).

The Skoda King of the Mountains maillot started on the shoulders of Nic Dlamini (Dimension Data), but when he missed the break with just 13 points to his name and 24 on offer it was a matter of time before the South African ceded the lead. In fact, it was Dlamini's team-mate Davies who disposessed him, taking maximum points over all three of the day's climbs.
Matt Bostock, racing for the National GB team, started the day in the Eisberg Sprints maillot, but failed to make the break. As a result, WIGGINS' Matthew Teggart was able to hoover up the intermediates virtually unopposed and swap his Le Col-made team maillot for the equally flattering Le Col-made leader's tricot.
