Ambassador Q+A : James Lowsley-Williams (Hank)

Meet James “Hank” Lowsley-Williams, former GCN presenter, ex-pro cyclist, and now our newest ambassador. After leaving GCN, James is focusing on his next chapter in cycling and sharing his passion with the Le Col community. We've done a Q+A with him so you can get to know him a bit better and learn from some of his cycling experiences.

 Journey & Career

What inspired you to get into professional cycling, and what’s kept you motivated over the years?

I got into cycling with the soul ambition of getting fitter to be able to attempt climbing Everest at a young age, when I realised I couldn’t get to Everest that year my step dad and mum decided to send me to the Newport velodrome to see if I had any potential after one ride I was hooked! The camaraderie, the speed, the adrenaline and the potential of putting it all on the line for your teammates made it a sport that I couldn’t let go of!!

Looking back, what’s one pivotal moment in your career that defined you as a rider?

There was one moment that has stood with me for a long time, and that was working for Adam Blythe when he went on to win the London Surrey Classic on the Mall. This was an exceptional experience winning a home world tour race, and coming to the finish line with Bradley Wiggins after winning the Tour De France not much comes close to that moment!

What’s a misconception people have about pro cycling life?

The dedication and sacrifice at 17 years old I had one goal in mind going as far as I could in the sport, I left a social life, my school and I moved home as I put everything on red!

Training, Performance & Mindset

What’s your number-one tip for riders looking to improve?

Train smart, I spent many many years putting hours and hours in on the bike but if I had trained a bit smarter, ate well and rested I could have been better!

How do you approach recovery after long, tough rides?

A protein fuelled meal, a good movie, and some stretching!

When the legs are tired and motivation is low, what gets you through a long or hard session?

Knowing every missed session is a missed opportunity to get better!

Gear, Kit & Tech

What’s one piece of kit you swear by for comfort or performance?

A neck warmer! Looks cool, keeps you warm, and in the winter it is a must!

Any Le Col piece that’s changed the way you ride?

The insulated gilet, this is a garment that has come on leaps and bounds since I started riding in Le Col, back in 2011 it is warm light and folds up nicely in the back pocket!

Riding, Adventure Stories

If you could design your dream cycling trip, where would it be and what would it include?

Riding in Africa. I saw a clip of Mark Beaumont (world record holder for around the world) of cycling next to a giraffe and that was a moment that has stayed with him forever! Imagine riding around Africa and experiencing that kind of wildlife! And the plus is you may get some pretty epic Strava’s when being chased by a lion!

Have you ever had a ride that completely humbled you?

Yes! Attempting to ride lands end to Johno’groats for a tandem record! It was savage I made it to Edinburgh but couldn’t go any further, that was brutal 6 hours in 10mins off!

Hank's Advice to you...

What advice would you give someone just getting into road cycling?

Go out have fun! Enjoy the freedom it gives and explore! Then let the performance come later

How do you stay motivated through winter or tough training periods?

Knowing that when the going gets tough, the fewer competitors are out training meaning you're getting training when others are resting!
