Cambridge University Cycling Club : le col custom

Founded in 1874, Cambridge University Cycling Club is one of the oldest cycling clubs in the world. From its early days racing penny farthings to celebrating its 150th anniversary last year, the club has continually adapted while keeping cycling at its core.

Today, CUCC runs rides for all abilities, from relaxed social spins to competitive racing at BUCS, including the Team Time Trial at Castle Combe. For many members, the club offers a break from university routines, a chance to leave the city, ride in the surrounding countryside, and spend time with people from across the university.

What makes being part of your club special?

What makes the club special is the way you can escape the rest of university life. Leaving the city for a morning ride in the countryside, and leaving your usual class mates to talk to cycling club members doing all sorts of degrees is the best way to clear your head and get some perspective.

What kinds of events or challenges does the club take part in?

Our main competition is the British Universites and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships. The BUCS Team Time Trial of 3-person teams lapping around Castle Combe is especially fun to race so fast on a motor-racing circuit

What details or design elements mean the most to you?

Over the years, our ‘second kit’ design has become extremely popular. We always make a Cambridge blue ‘race kit’ but our second kit is a chance to use some different colours, be a little bit out there and have some fun. Pink kit has been a particular club favourite!

If someone joined your club tomorrow, what kind of experience would they have?

Someone new joining can take the sport as seriously or unseriously as they like. At the end of the day, we all like a good natter on the bike and a delish slice of cake at the halfway point!

How do you balance cycling as a club with university life?

Everybody (well, almost everybody) works hard, but those who get the most out of Uni play hard too: so many people get out on the weekends or do a training session in the evening to unwind. It’s excellent fun to forget about work and escape the town on a weekend morning.

The route then turns southwards, and comes back into Cambridge through Chatteris and Northstowe. The route is characterised by long straight sections, exposure to the wind, and being completely flat. It’s ideal for a big group trying to go as fast as possible and ends with the town-sign sprint to Girton.
