For many cyclists, it’s become something to avoid and the season becomes more about smart trainers, indoor watts and staying within their comfort zone.
It’s dark when the alarm goes off, the roads are damp, and the thought of staying indoors is more tempting. The clocks have changed, daylight is shorter, and every ride starts or ends in darkness. We tell ourselves we weren’t made for frozen fingers, flooded lanes, muddy tyres, numb toes or wet gloves that never quite dry out.
But for those who still love to ride their bikes outside and realise it’s too early to start thinking about training plans or next season, there’s a strange satisfaction in rolling out when it’s barely light and when the weather gives you every excuse not to. Now is the time to rediscover what you enjoy about the bike.
